GBC’s Joyce Kantam Kolamong has won two awards at the Northern Regional Ghana Journalist Association, GJA, Awards Night held on in Tamale.
She was adjudged the Best Reporter in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH category and Best Reporter in Disability, which she jointly won with Mohammed Fugu of Daily Graphic.
The Awards night also saw five other journalists receiving awards in different categories.
Mohammed Fugu of Daily Graphic won the Journalist of the year, 2021, for Northern, Savannah and North East. The night also recognized four Radio and TV stations in the North East, Savannah and Northern regions for their immense contributions to development in their respective regions.
The Northern Regional GJA Chairman, Abdul Majeed, acknowledged the contributions of the media to peace and development and encouraged them to strive harder. He announced plans by the association to put up a GJA secretariat or media centre in Tamale and called for the support of all stakeholders and individuals.
The National President of GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, said the setting up of the Journalists Support Fund is to provide training to journalists to build their capacities on safety and security adding that it will also support journalists who face all kinds of atrocities in their line of work.
The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Alhaji Dr. Mohammed Awal, commended journalists for helping the Regional Coordinating Council to maintain peace in the region.
He said 2 out of 10 jobs created are from the tourism sector and urged journalists to throw more light on domestic tourism. Mr Awal said his ministry is focusing on the promotion of domestic tourism to boost cross cultures, build national unity and create revenue. He indicated that one million tourists are expected to go round the country by the end of December.
One million tourists are also expected in the country by the end of December. This is to rake in a revenue of about 2.4 billion dollars. He pledged 50,000 cedis support to the Association in the training of journalists in the tourism space to sharpen their reporting skills.
The event was attended by Regional Ministers for the Northern, North East, Upper East and Upper West Regions. The awards focused on ‘Promoting Tourism and Culture to Create Jobs; The Role of the Media”.
