A Resident at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Dr. Adelaide Asante, has stated that men are more at risk of developing gout than women.
Gout is an inflammatory condition that affects single joints, usually the big toes of the human body, and is caused by the deposition of uric acid crystals.
Speaking on the causes and treatment of gout on GTV’s Breakfast Show, Dr. Asante stated that men have a higher risk of developing gout than women, and it’s because “women possess oestrogen hormones that help in the secretion of uric acid but men do not”.
According to her, the excessive intake of red meat, seafood, soda, and alcohol can contribute to the development of gout.
This is because, “red meats, alcohol, sea foods, and soda contains parents which are broken down into uric acid”.
She advised against dehydration and reducing the intake of red meat and alcohol to stay safe from developing gout.
