The youth wing of Lions Club International- Leo Clubs District 418 has organised a free health screening on diabetes and hypertension for some 400 residents of Madina in Accra.
The exercise with sponsorship from appsNmobile Solutions Limited, a leading FINTECH in Ghana was to empower residents with easy access to knowledge and resources to strengthen their capacity to prevent type 2 diabetes in their families and better safeguard their own health.
Leo Clubs District 418 President, Priscilla Anim, said reducing Type 2 diabetes requires a life-course approach.
“Our lifestyle is actually disturbing. What we eat and everything, we being here we are educating them on the risk factors, the causes, the symptoms and how to prevent diabetes. We are also doing malaria tests, we take their details, check their BMI, BP and everything and it’s totally free. Honestly, my mom is diabetic, and living with her is a bit problematic. I decided to take it upon myself to screen people and also educate them about getting diabetes because prevention is better than cure,” she said.
She advised Ghanaians to eat well and exercise regularly and called for the prioritisation of health needs to prevent unforeseen circumstances.
A nurse and member of the Accra Ultimate Leo Club, Amanda Armah, advised Ghanaians to regularly check their health status as symptoms such as frequent urination, dizziness, weight loss, and infections must be reported as early as possible. “With the education we are giving them, we want them to check their BP regularly, either early in the morning on their way to the market or late in the evening when they close.”
Some beneficiaries who shared their thoughts with GBC News advised others to take advantage of free health screening and be conscious of what they put in their bodies.
