The Executive Secretary of the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation, CONIWAS, Basilar Nangbine, has reiterated calls on the government to provide potable water for communities without water.
This, according to her, will help them practice proper hand washing as well as enable the country to achieve its target sustainable development goals on Water and Sanitation.
Mrs. Nangbine said this in a telephone interview with GBC-Obonu News during this year’s Global Hand Washing Day celebration.
It was under the theme; Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene. Global Hand Washing Day is celebrated annually to create awareness of the importance of hand washing under running water.
Mrs. Nangbine noted that there are still many schools and healthcare facilities lacking access to potable water. She said to ensure that the country achieves any gains, with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal Six, the government must ensure that no one is left behind.
She commended the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation for developing the Hand Hygiene Strategic Plan; stressing that when complete and implemented, it will provide strategic directions for hand hygiene interventions.
The Executive Secretary of CONIWAS called for the collective effort of stakeholders in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene sector in order to continue the advocacy on proper hand washing with soap.
