The Ashanti Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang has advised health workers to desist from stigmatizing patients with infectious diseases, but rather support them to recuperate. Dr. Tenkorang was speaking at a ceremony to inaugurate a 10-bed Isolation Centre at the Suntreso Government Hospital in Kumasi, built by Unique Royal Club, a Non-Governmental Organization.
The idea to construct an isolation centre by the Unique Royal Club was in response to a request by Management of the Suntreso Government Hospital for such a facility to manage Covid-19 cases and other infectious diseases. This was when the Club made a donation to the hospital during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was revealed during the presentation that inadequate isolation centres in the Ashanti Region brought a lot of pressure on the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate.
This led to the renting of hotels to serve as isolation centres to contain the disease. The Centre constructed by Unique Royal Club consists of male and female wards, equipped with television sets, storerooms, offices for health professionals and washrooms. The facility was named after Dr. Akwasi Tweneboah Kodua, the Male Ward, Kofi Gyamfi and Female Ward, George Kwaku Kumi, all founding members of the Club who had contributed immensely towards the construction of the Centre. Chairman of the Unique Royal Club, Kofi Gyamfi, said the facility was built at a cost of
GHC295,000 to accommodate patients with infectious diseases including Covid-19.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei- Mensah advised the management of the hospital to maintain the facility. The Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang called for public and private support for the Ghana Health Service towards sustainable health delivery.
