Statistics at the Child Health Directorate of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi show, that between 25 and 40 children die every year from kidney disease.
The Directorate receives about 150 children with kidney disease yearly but only few survive due to lack of funds. Dialysis treatment cost about 900 cedis a month, posing a challenge to many parents who are unable to afford treatment.
Many of the children with terminal kidney disease, die because of the cost involved in kidney transplant.
Director at the Child Health Directorate, Prof. Sampson Antwi, who disclosed this to Journalists in Kumasi, said some of the kidney patients at the ward are in critical condition and can only be saved through a kidney transplant that can be successfully undertaken in India, at a cost of 45,000 dollars.
Prof. Antwi, believes the only way to save the children is for government to establish a Special Fund to cater for children with kidney condition.
Prof Antwi said an Association of Parents with Kidney Disease has been formed to raise funds to support children with kidney condition and this will be launched in Kumasi next month.
He appealed to Ghanaians to contribute to save the lives of the children.
