The Senior Midwifery Officer at the Tema Community One Health Centre has reiterated on the GTV Breakfast Show that, Midwifery is the oldest Profession ever.

According to her, Midwifery has been in existence since creation.

“So, Midwifery has come a long way. It’s the oldest Profession so far in Ghana. I don’t know who will say they are older than us anyway.  Even from creation Midwifery was there before Medicine, before Nursing”, she stated.

She added that Midwifery is mostly thought in the wards.

“Aside from the tutorials, you go for clinical so that is where actual learning takes place a lot because we have preceptors at the ward who will guide you. They won’t leave you with the mother alone they will guide you”, she added.

She however explained the stages before delivery.

“It starts from stages, from stages one to three and four. So, the first stage is when the mother comes and you do a vaginal examination and you realise that really the mother is in labour.  You have an assessment you have to do before you put the mother in a comfortable bed. Then you monitor her till she is 10cm before you do the delivery”, she explained.

Every May 5, is set aside as International Midwives Day.  The day is observed to honour the work of Midwives and to promote awareness about their importance to provide crucial care to mothers and their newborns. In Ghana, it is observed to recognise the best Midwives in every region.
