National policy needed to help fund cost of treating kidney diseases – Senior Lecturer

National policy needed to help fund cost of treating kidney diseases - Titus Beyuo

A Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School, Titus Beyuo, says the new adjustment in the cost of renal dialysis for persons diagnosed with kidney failure by the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, is just a way of getting them enough funds to keep operating.

He said if government fails to waive import duties and taxes on the machines and consumables imported into the country, Ghanaians should brace themselves for an even higher fee.

Dr. Beyuo urged government to strengthen the National Health Insurance Authority and also implement a national policy to help fund part of the cost of treating kidney diseases.

The Acting General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Richard Selormey also urged government to have a national dialogue on funding the preventive services like regular checkups, that will help detect these issues at an early stage and also waive taxes and import duties on medical equipment.

He said, the new cost of treatment goes beyond just dialysis.
