The Ghana Health Service will from the 20th to 24th of this month embark on a national Covid-19 vaccination drive, to increase head immunity. Speaking on GTV Breakfast, the Director General of the Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, said periodic campaigns have been critical to reaching large numbers of the population.

He said although the country has so far not recorded any cases of the Omicron variant, it will not let down its guard. Dr. Kuma Aboagye urged the public to get vaccinated because there are enough vaccines.

Dr. Kuma Aboagye, indicated that the country currently has 22 active cases, which are being managed at home. He said the flu season, as a result of the harmattan, is a wake-up call for the service to step up education, to prevent a surge in infections.

“Omicron is spreading very fast. So far based on the sequencing we have not been able to identify any yet in Ghana of that variant but whatever it is, we just have to be using the same mechanism most important which is vaccination. That why we are  pushing to ensure that everyone is vaccinated”

“Currently we have about 22 active cases as at the 2nd of this month. But around middle of December we had around 9 which means that we relatively have a low caseload. But the challenge is we are in the flu season we have many countries which are showing increases in cases. We have some countries having an increase in hospitalization and death. So obviously you will need to start getting on guard so that we don’t get surprised”

Dr. Kuma Aboagye, advised the public to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols, especially avoiding congested places.
