On GTV’s breakfast show on Thursday, September 5, 2024, Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare, Presidential Adviser on Health and member of the NPP Manifesto Team on Health, emphasized that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is the most effective way to pay for healthcare services.
Established by former President John Agyekum Kufuor in 2003, the NHIS has seen significant growth, with active membership increasing from 10.6 million in 2016 to over 17.6 million Ghanaians today.
Dr. Asare highlighted the NPP government’s improvements to the NHIS, including the introduction of a digital renewal process via *929#.
“the expansion of coverage to include childhood cancers, sickle cell patients, prostate cancer, medical examinations, and free dialysis for vulnerable groups such as those aged 60 and above and children below 18.”
“Among others where adults can walk into any hospital private or public to get checked”.
However, Dr. Asare acknowledged that the NHIS faces challenges, particularly with funding. He assured that allocating 80-90% of the National Health Insurance levy to the scheme would ensure its viability and sustainability.
