Surviving thyroid disease- Nana Adwoa’s story

Rotarian Nana Adwoa Konadu Dsane, the Deputy Director, Medical and Scientific Research Centre University of Ghana Medical Centre and also the Founder of Thyroid Ghana Foundation, has been narrating her experience having suffered from thyroid disease.

Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show on December 7,  2022, Rotarian Nana Adwoa shared her secret of survival. “In 2016 after birthing my last baby I released I was losing weight. Within five months I had lost 25kg. My face was swollen, my muscles became weak, l lost weight and I became very dark,” she stated.

She mentioned being away from work for five months due to the illness and the fact that she mostly depended on people to move around, because it was difficult for her to walk.

The Thyroid Gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located right below the Adam’s Apple, and it’s responsible for the production of hormones called THYROGEN, which help in the growth and temperature of the body.

She further stated that if the glands are not producing, the right amount of hormones, it means the Thyroid Gland is sick and one needs to seek medical attention.

Thyroid glands disease affects women more than men because women have more hormones than men, she further stated.

At this time, one is likely to lose hair, there is brittle nails, absence of menstruation in women, on and off sore throat, losing weight, discoloring of the skin, bulging of the eyes, hoarseness of the voice.

She further stated that this disease could be as a result of the lifestyle of the mother during pregnancy on the baby or could also be genetic.

She also encouraged anyone experiencing the symptoms and signs to have their Thyroid glands checked.
