The 1996 Class of Wesley Girls’ High School has donated three pieces of equipment worth over GHS100,000 to the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Cape-Coast Teaching Hospital.
They are an Incubator (a machine designed to provide a safe, controlled space for premature babies), two Photo-therapy Machines (Firefly – a machine for preventing morbidity and mortality from dangerous levels of neonatal jaundice), and a Radiant Warmer (a body warming device).
The donation, which was from Breakfast Fundraising organised by the Class of 1996 in April this year, formed part of the Group’s activities to mark their 25th Anniversary.
The Group indicated having known the plight of parents, particularly, mothers, whose newborns struggled to survive due to the lack of the machines to support their early development thus the decision to offer assistance to the Hospital.
Mrs. Leninsor Kakrabah-Quarshie, President of the 1996 WGHS year Group said: “The decision to support the NICU of the Cape-Coast Teaching Hospital boiled down to the desire to minimise the anguish of parents, especially mothers, who have to watch on helplessly as their new-born and often preterm infants struggle to survive due to lack of basic equipment such as incubators, warmers, phototherapy machines, oxygen concentrators.”
It also demonstrated the Group’s commitment and willingness to contribute to the development of the Cape-Coast community where their alma mater is located and the nation.
Mrs. Kakrabah-Quarshie added that Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast, has a longstanding tradition of ‘Old Girls’ undertaking various projects to support not just the infrastructural needs of the school, but the community and nation.
Present at the handing over ceremony were Executives and members of the WGHS Class of 1996 led by the President, Ms. Leninsor Kakrabah-Quarshie, Organising Secretary, Mrs. Akua Asare, and Treasurer, Ms. Francesca Bedzra.
Also present were the National President of the WGHS Old Girls’ Association, Mrs. Effie Simpson, as well as the President and Vice President of the 1997 Year Group.
Dr. Joyce Ansong, Head of Pediatrics NICU, Dr. Robert Inkoom, Director of Pharmacy, Mad Paulina Adomako, Deputy Director of Nursing Services, and Kafui Agbedenu, Deputy Director of Finance and Budget, received the equipment on behalf of the Hospital.
Dr. Inkoom thanked the WGHS Class of 1996 for the gesture and called for more of such support.
