The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union, ICU-Ghana, says the government’s 24-hour economy policy, targeting new avenues for employment generation for the country’s teeming unemployed youth, is welcome news, which must be supported to succeed. The Union hopes the realization of that noble intention for job creation and sustainability, will improve income and social protection of Ghanaian workers.

This was stated by the ICU-Ghana, General Secretary, Morgan Ayawine, at the opening of the union’s regional conferences in six regions.

Mr. Ayawine, urged the conference delegates to ensure that their collective decisions will continue to position the ICU as the preferred trade union organization in Ghana and one of the best in Africa.

He said the forthcoming 12th Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference of the ICU, scheduled for August, this year, will offer the union a great opportunity to highlight socio-economic issues that are negatively affecting workers which the government must address.

He indicated that workers shoulder the development of the nation, and it is critical to deal with policies that are inimical to their interest and livelihoods.

Mr. Ayawine, emphasized that the Union after the 11th Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference, in 2021, has re-built itself from the ashes of the COVID-19 Pandemic that wreaked havoc across business enterprises, and caused huge membership attrition.

He said, with the approach of the 12th Quadrennial Delegates conference, which is only five months away, the leadership and members of the ICU-Ghana will continue to exhibit selfless devotion to work and ensure harmonious Worker-Management relationship to move the Union to greater heights.

Mr. Ayawine, added that in these challenging times, every effort must be made by government, employers and labour to address labour related concerns with speed and alacrity in order to forestall unnecessary industrial actions at the workplace.

He stressed that productivity suffers when there is no peace and harmony at the workplace.
