The chairperson of the newly formed People’s National Party, Janet Asana Nabla, has highlighted the challenges women face in reaching the top in politics.

Speaking in an interview on June 23, 2024, Janet Asana Nabla said the only position reserved for women is the women’s organizer, and even with that, they are often relegated to menial tasks.

Madam Nabla emphasized that it is extremely difficult for women to rise in politics

“I’m not surprised many women are discouraged and leaving politics altogether. The pressure and tension are unbearable, especially when you’re a woman aiming for the top. They’ll throw stones at you, do everything to pull you down. In Ghana‘s politics, women are often relegated to subordinate roles.”

Madam Nabla shared her personal experience, “When I sought to become the general secretary, I received calls from prominent figures, including family members, telling me that position wasn’t suitable for a woman.

She continued that, some people discouraged her saying she would not succeed, especially against male contestants. But she persevered, ignoring their advice, and ultimately succeeded.”

The remarks by the Chairperson of the People’s National Party underscores the gender bias and obstacles that hinder women’s participation in politics, emphasizing the need for support and empowerment to overcome these challenges.
