Lionel Messi, the reigning Major League Soccer (MLS) Most Valuable Player (MVP), has been fined an undisclosed amount by MLS following a heated exchange during Inter Miami’s season opener against New York City FC.
The incident occurred at the end of the match, where Messi was seen placing a hand on the back of NYCFC’s assistant coach, Mehdi Ballouchy, as he walked off the field.
This action violated the league’s policy against hands to the face, head or neck of an opponent.
The MLS Disciplinary Committee confirmed the fine, stating that Messi was penalized for his actions. Moments before the incident, the Argentine star had already been given a yellow card for a heated confrontation with the referee, further escalating tensions on the field.
Messi’s teammate Luis Suárez also received an undisclosed fine for a similar gesture, grabbing the neck of NYCFC defender Birk Risa during the first half of the match. Both players were disciplined for violating the league’s conduct policy. Despite the commissioner’s statement, Inter Miami has declined to comment on the fines, citing an ongoing investigation.
The match itself was a thrilling 2-2 draw, marking the beginning of the MLS season for both teams. Inter Miami, despite being reduced to 10 players in the first half due to a controversial foul call, managed to equalize in stoppage time with a goal from Telasco Segovia, who was set up by Messi. The game showcased the high-stakes nature of MLS competition, with Messi playing a pivotal role in keeping his team in the match despite the disciplinary issues.
