Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, says the John Dramani Mahama-led administration is actively working to restore faith in Ghana’s political leadership after what he characterized as a period of widespread disillusionment under the previous government.

Mr. Sammy Gyamfi’s comments were made during an interview on TV3’s New Day show on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

he said the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government fostered a climate of distrust and despair. “I made this point somewhere yesterday, that in the last eight years under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government, one commodity that was very scarce was the commodity of trust in public leadership and hope…People lost hope in the political class. We saw unprecedented disillusionment in our young people” he said.

He further claimed that this disillusionment led to decreased civic engagement. “People gave up on Ghana. People ridiculed the political class. People lost interest in politics and elections” Sammy  Gyamfi said. “And I think that partly accounted for the low turnout we witnessed in the 2024 election. Because there were some who erroneously thought that all politicians are the same. They lie their way into office for power only to flatter and deceive on their promises” Mr. Sammy Gyamfi said.

Sammy Gyamfi presented the Mahama administration as a contrast to this perceived decline in integrity. “But yesterday, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama demonstrated that all politicians are not the same and that there are still men of integrity in politics,” Mr. Gyamfi concluded.
