Some people have recounted horrid experiences of either studying Mathematics or with a Mathematics Teacher going through the Ghanaian educational system.
Governance Expert and Director General of the Internal Audit Agency, Dr. Eric Oduro Osae was not left out in this ordeal.
According to him, he was warned by his Mathematics Teacher that when he specializes in Mathematics and does not manage it well, he will become poor.
“I liked mathematics in school because I was a business student. So I asked him why he thinks if I study Math I can’t become rich and he said it doesn’t apply in the day to day life. And if I want to be rich I should go into business Math or the sciences and become a great Medical Doctor”, he said.
Contrary to his Mathematics Teacher’s view, Dr. Oduro Osae disclosed that after many years of studying Mathematics, he has realized that it trains the brain to think outside the box and challenge the status quo. Meanwhile, he maintains that he cannot connect it to real life.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show on International Mathematics Day, he lamented the style adopted in teaching mathematics in the country and called for a more attractive way of teaching the subject to make it more meaningful to students.
“The way we teach mathematics in this country is very terrible. You come to school in the morning and there is some mental. You should be able to recite the multiplication table. And you are not allowed to breathe or you be caned”, he added.
