The Minority in Parliament has strongly criticized the government over a series of security raids targeting former government officials, calling them politically motivated and a violation of fundamental rights.

Speaking at a press conference, Second Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, accused security agencies, particularly the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and National Security, of abusing their powers to intimidate political opponents. He also alleged that the Attorney General had overstepped his role by directly influencing investigations.

“These raids are not about justice but about political persecution,” the Minority Whip stated, emphasizing that state power should not be used as a tool for intimidation.

The Minority highlighted recent incidents, including the February 10 raid on former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta’s residence, where armed operatives reportedly conducted a search without a warrant. Other affected individuals include former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, former Energy Minister John Peter Amewu, and ex-Jubilee House Director of Operations, Lord Oblitey Commey.

According to the Minority, these actions violate Article 18 of Ghana’s Constitution, which guarantees the right to privacy and protection from arbitrary searches. They warned that such incidents erode public trust in state institutions and pose a threat to democracy.

The opposition urged civil society, the media, and the public to stand against what they describe as selective justice and abuse of power. “Today, it is Dr. Addison. Tomorrow, it could be anyone who dares to think differently,” Jerry Shaib warned.

The government is yet to respond to these allegations.
