The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated that it will not be intimidated by the multiple invitations issued by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to some of its members.
Speaking in an interview with Citi FM, Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed described the invitations as shocking but insisted that the party would not succumb to any attempts by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to silence its members.
“We as a party have received this particular news as a shock and we have since been asking ourselves, is there the return of the criminal libel law? Is it that free speech has been stifled, or is it just that we have got into government and we need to intimidate them?” he questioned.
“I want to put it on record that we in the New Patriotic Party would not be intimidated by the government’s clandestine move to silence us not to speak out. We will speak out, and we encourage members of our party to speak out,” he asserted.
The controversy follows the NIB’s invitation of Bono Regional NPP Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, on Saturday, February 22.
Additionally, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, was detained over alleged financial irregularities.
In a related development, former Deputy Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), Kwame Ohene Djan, was also arrested in connection with the NSA scandal.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ameyaw-Akumfi has been granted bail, while Abronye is expected to honor the NIB’s invitation on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
