The Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee and Member of Parliament (MP) for Obuasi West Constituency in the Ashanti region, Mr. Kwaku Kwarteng, has been reassigned to the newly formed Economy Committee of the House.

The Obuasi West lawmaker will thus serve as the spokesperson for the newly established Economy Committee.

His reassignment was announced by the Majority Leader and leader of the government business in Ghana’s Parliament, Mr Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin on floor of Parliament on Friday 28 June 2024.

In presenting the business statement for the upcoming week, Mr. Afenyo-Markin explained that Mr Kwarteng will now serve as the majority caucus’ spokesperson on the Economy Committee, replacing his previous role as Finance Committee Chair.

“Honourable Kwaku Kwarteng is going to be our spokesperson on the economy,” he stated, adding “Yes the new economy committee is going to be the most important committee in this house.”

But the Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah described the announcement of Kwaku Kwarteng’s new role as an overthrow.

“Simply announce that you have overthrown him and made changes. Please respected Majority Leader you should know better. This is not how we overthrow people,” he stated.

This new development comes on the back of several accusations leveled against Mr. Kwaku Kwarteng, who until his new designation chairs the Finance Committee, of hindering the approval of tax waivers for some selected companies under the government’s flagship One District One Factory policy program.
