The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) in collaboration with its partners – Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ministry of Energy (MoEn), Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Petroleum Commission (PC) and Ghana National Gas Limited Company (GNGLC), is hosting a 2-day technical consultative workshop on16th and 17th October 2024 in Accra.
The event will bring together technical experts, policymakers, key stakeholders, academia, and industry players to discuss the declining trend of crude oil production and to explore options aimed at identifying solutions to address the decline.
The workshop will feature presentations and panel discussions on the overview of crude oil production in Ghana and its downward trajectory. There will also be sessions on how to streamline regulatory policies to attract investments in the upstream oil and gas sector, how to overcome technical challenges, and how to position the oil sector vis-à-vis the global energy transition.
The Consultative Workshop will be in three parts – opening, technical and closing. The opening and closing sessions will stream live on PIAC’s Facebook Page. The Chairperson of PIAC, Emerita Professor Elizabeth Ardayfio-Schnadorf said the engagement aims at providing a comprehensive technical consultative platform for stakeholders to have meaningful discussions and develop actionable solutions to address the challenge.
She said the Committee, through its Statutory Reports, has raised concerns about the declining trend, and recommended efforts to speed up the sustainable development of Ghana’s petroleum resources to reverse the decline in production. She added that, beyond this recommendation, the Committee recognises the importance of a comprehensive approach to addressing the issues identified, hence the technical consultative workshop.
In addition to the Chairperson of PIAC, other Speakers at the workshop include the Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, Herbert Krapa, and Former Deputy Chief Executive of GNPC, Dr Thomas Manu.
The Keynote Speaker for the workshop is Mr Constantine K.M. Kudzedzi, a Lawyer and the Bishops’ representative to the Board of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC).
