Voting is currently ongoing at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Hall for the Greater Accra Regional Council of State election.
A total of 58 delegates are expected to cast their votes to elect a representative for the region. The Electoral Commission (EC), led by Greater Accra Regional Director Mrs. Gladys Pinkrah, is supervising the process, which has been described as smooth so far.
Thirteen candidates are vying for the position, including Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, Summertime Kwabillna Ampong, Sampson Seyram Kwadzo Agbemabiese, Charles Yaw Horvey, Redeemer Worwui, Joseph Tetten Sottie, and Herbert Nii Aryee Annan.
Others are Musah Ziyad, Samuel Duah, Albert Borketey Naawu, Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, Edmund Siaw Akugbey, and Obed Nyarko.
The Council of State, established under Articles 89 to 92 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, serves as an advisory body to the President.
Its members include a former Chief Justice, a former Chief of Defence Staff, a former Inspector-General of Police (all appointed by the President in consultation with Parliament), the President of the National House of Chiefs, one elected representative from each region, and 11 other presidential appointees.
The Council advises on parliamentary bills and key appointments and elects its chairman from among its members. Its tenure aligns with that of the sitting President unless a member resigns or is removed.
Voting began at 7:00 AM and will end at 5:00 PM today, with results to be announced afterward by the EC.
