The Minority in Parliament has accused operatives of the National Security Secretariat of conducting unlawful raids on political opponents, alleging that some personnel have resorted to theft in the process.

At a press conference on Thursday, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned what he described as a “Rambo-style” approach used by security operatives to storm the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, on Wednesday, March 19.

According to him, security operatives who raided Dr. Addison’s home in Accra, made away with GH₵10,000.

“Unfortunately for the Governor some GH¢10,000 cedis on his bed could not be found.”

Additionally, he claimed that valuables belonging to Dr. Addison’s wife, including earrings and necklaces, were also stolen during the operation.

His remark follows a raid on the residence of former BoG Governor, Ernest Addison, at Roman Ridge in Accra, allegedly carried out by operatives of the National Security.

The member of parliament for Effutu, also suggested that the operatives involved in these raids were politically motivated and possibly unpaid, forcing them to steal from their targets.

“Some of these hungry party foot soldiers, who parade themselves as national security operatives, are perhaps not even being paid, so they use these so-called operations as an opportunity to steal,” he stated.

He expressed outrage at what he sees as an unprecedented level of abuse of power, stating that this is the first time in Ghana’s history that a former central bank governor has been subjected to such treatment.

The Minority also accused the government of using National Security operatives to intimidate political opponents, particularly appointees of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“This lawlessness must stop. It is clear that the government has unleashed national security operatives on its opponents, particularly appointees of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” Afenyo-Markin charged.

He called on the government to halt these actions immediately and ensure that national security personnel operate within the confines of the law, rather than acting as enforcers of political persecution.
