Panelists on GBC’s Current Affairs Programme FOCUS have shared their opinions on whether MP for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo should be sacked from the NPP and her seat declared vacant following her continuous absence from Parliament.
The absence of Miss Safo from Parliament for more than 2 weeks is said to be a major reason for not passing the E-Levy Bill as the NPP lacked the required quorum (numbers).
MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has alleged that the Dome-Kwabenya MP is holding the Party to ransom because she wants to be reinstated as Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament.
MP for Tamale Central Murtala Mohammed has declared his support for the embattled Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Adwoa Safo.
He said the NPP alone cannot declare the Dome-Kwabenya seat vacant because per the standing orders, two-thirds of Members in Parliament have to vote on such a determination.
Mr. Mohammed insisted that he will not vote to remove AdwoaSafo from Parliament even if the NDC decides to vote in favour of sacking her from the House.
”If they sack Adwoa Safo it doesn’t make her seat automatically vacant. Someone will have to petition the Speaker and the Speaker will refer the petition to the Privileges Committee in Parliament. If they decide that let’s declare her seat vacant they would have to refer it to the whole House to debate and vote for two-thirds of Parliament to agree to declare the seat vacant. The NDC will never do that. Even if the NDC decides to vote and remove her from Parliament, I will not join them, I will oppose it because she is my friend and she is a nice person”, declared, MP for Tamale Central Murtala Mohammed.
The Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Professional Studies, UPSA Professor Koku Mawutor disagreed with the Tamale Central MP Murtala Muhammed and accused him of considering friendship over national interest.
”I might disagree with you on your submissions that you will not support the removal of Adwoa Safo from Parliament. It’s like you are choosing friendship over the implementation of an alleged wrongful act and as an MP I expected that you look at it from the merit of the case”, according to Professor Koku Mawutor, as he joined Panelists on our Current Affairs Programme FOCUS to discuss whether or not the MP for Dome-Kwabenya Sarah Adwoa Safo should be sacked from her party for her continuous absence from Parliament.
