The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed that government officials personally appealed to the Minority to allow the Greater Accra Regional Minister nominee, Linda Akweley Ocloo, to go through her vetting without being questioned.

Ocloo’s vetting, which took place on January 28, 2025, lasted less than 10 minutes, surprising many as no questions were asked by members of the Appointments Committee. This unusual event has sparked debates and raised concerns about why she was not scrutinized.

Speaking in an interview on GTV breakfast with Thelma Tackie on Monday, February 3, Afenyo-Markin explained that the Minority’s silence was due to a direct request from government officials.

“They came begging that the woman could not stand the scrutiny. They said she is a widow and that she could not handle the pressure, so we let her go,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that Ocloo met the requirements under Article 78 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which states that a minister must be a Member of Parliament or qualified to be elected as one. Based on this, the Minority decided not to oppose her nomination.

This revelation has led to discussions on whether personal circumstances should influence the vetting process of government appointees.
