Residents of Assin North in the Central region are voting in the constituency’s parliamentary by-election today.
The seat became vacant when the Supreme Court in a unanimous decision declared as unconstitutional and therefore null and avoid the election of NDC MP, James Gyekye Quayson in 2020.
He was found to have been ineligible at the time he filed his nomination form to contest the 2020 parliamentary election for being a dual citizen.
More than 41,000 eligible voters are expected to cast their ballot to elect a new MP.
Mr. Gyakye Quayson is still the candidate for the National Democratic Congress, NDC, while Charles Opoku is standing on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party, NPP. The two are the forerunners in the election.
The EC says it is ready to ensure a free and fair by-election in Assin North.
