Former Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam has hit back at President John Mahama’s claims that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government “criminally mishandled” Ghana’s economy.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, February 2025, Dr Amin Adam questioned how an economy allegedly mismanaged could afford significant salary increments for public sector workers while maintaining reasonable fiscal deficits.

“Two questions for the Government! How could an economy described as ‘criminally mishandled’ afford increases in the base pay for public sector workers by 30% in 2023; 23% from January to June 2024; and 25% from July to December 2024, and still post decent fiscal deficits?” he wrote.

The Member of Parliament for Karaga Constituency further challenged the government to explain why the country’s economic position had seemingly deteriorated since the beginning of 2025.

“What has changed between December 2024 and February 2025, that suddenly put the economy in crisis, which cannot afford an adjustment in the base pay above 10%?” he added.

Dr Amin Adam’s comments come in response to President Mahama’s remarks at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, where the government announced a 10% increase in base pay for public sector workers.

During the meeting, President Mahama accused the previous administration of severe economic mismanagement, claiming that their actions had crippled Ghana’s financial stability.
