A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has partly blamed former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta for the party’s significant loss in the December 7 elections.
Speaking on The Key Points on TV3 on Saturday, December 14, Mr. Appiah-Kubi, the outgoing Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, said the former finance minister became too powerful, making it difficult for NPP MPs to seek assistance from him.
“Ken Ofori-Atta grew too pompous. He was more powerful than the President and Vice President, and that was why we wanted him out,” Mr. Appiah-Kubi said.
In 2023, Mr. Appiah-Kubi and over 90 NPP MPs called for Mr. Ofori-Atta’s removal amid worsening economic conditions, including downgrades by international rating agencies. Constituents reportedly urged MPs to act on the high cost of living, but President Akufo-Addo did not dismiss the finance minister.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi also criticized other government ministers, accusing them of arrogance and ignoring MPs’ calls for development projects. “I bashed some of them on our pages. Some of the ministers were very arrogant,” he added.
In the same program, University of Ghana professor Ransford Gyampo called for sweeping changes in the NPP’s leadership. He accused the current executives of being controlled by President Akufo-Addo and warned of a potential collapse of the party if changes are not made.
“The NPP risks disintegrating if the party is not rescued from the claws of Akufo-Addo and his executives. We need a strong opposition to hold the government accountable,” Prof. Gyampo said.
He urged party members to take immediate action to restore the NPP’s strength and tradition.
