The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to use its new “majority status” in Parliament to reduce taxes for Ghanaians.
The party’s Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, said they plan to get rid of unpopular taxes, such as the Electronic Transfers Levy (E-Levy) and taxes on betting.
Speaking to journalists in Accra, Dr. Ato Forson highlighted the NDC’s goal of removing what he called “nuisance taxes.”
He assured the public that the party would quickly work to reverse policies that have caused economic difficulties under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Dr. Ato Forson emphasised that the NDC’s stronger position in Parliament would allow them to introduce measures to ease the financial struggles of ordinary people.
He confirmed that the party is committed to removing taxes that have caused dissatisfaction and economic pressure, signalling a shift in the party’s legislative plans.
“We will use our new majority to help Ghanaians by introducing private bills to remove the e-Levy and reduce people’s suffering,” he said.
“We will also use our new majority to eliminate the betting tax and other unnecessary taxes.
“The e-Levy, introduced by the NPP government, has faced criticism from many people and businesses due to its negative effects on transactions and economic activity.
Similarly, the recent tax on betting and gaming has caused concern, especially among young people who depend on these activities for income.”
Dr. Forson also criticised the NPP government for creating a “high tax regime” that he believes has harmed businesses and put many Ghanaians in financial trouble.
He assured the business community and the public that the NDC would use its majority to protect their interests.
