Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lost the 2024 general election not because of his failures but as a “victim of circumstances,” according to his campaign spokesperson, Miracles Denis Aboagye.

Speaking after last week’s election, Mr. Aboagye said many Ghanaians sympathize with Dr. Bawumia, believing he was unfairly judged for issues beyond his control. “It’s as if sins were brought upon him, which he had no control over, at a time when he was pursuing his mission,” Aboagye explained.

He added that Dr. Bawumia must now reach out to voters to address their concerns. “He has a responsibility to say, ‘I understand you have punished me for these things, but shall we have a conversation? Shall we heal these wounds and find a common path forward into the future?’”

Despite the defeat, Aboagye defended Dr. Bawumia’s leadership qualities, praising his innovation and capabilities. “His ability and the fact that he is the leader this country needs are not in doubt. But sometimes you can find yourself in the right place at the wrong time,” he noted.

In last week’s polls, John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won by a landslide, securing 6,328,397 votes against Dr. Bawumia’s 4,657,304 out of 11,191,422 valid votes cast.

As Mr. Mahama prepares to assume office on January 7, 2025, his transition team has begun working to take over from the administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia.
