Former Vice President of Ghana and the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that the greatest threat to Africa’s democracy today is what is termed “The Next Meal.”

“When the priority is the next meal, democracy becomes a secondary concern,” he stated.

According to him, for democracy to be meaningful, it must deliver tangible benefits, such as access to essential public goods and services, opportunities for economic advancement, and a fair society for all citizens. Arguing that poverty undermines political integrity, as people struggling to meet their basic needs are less likely to engage with democratic processes or trust the political system.

Dr. Bawumia pointed out that one of the greatest threats to democracy today is “the Next Meal.” He emphasized that the core value of democracy is not just about electing leaders but also ensuring that citizens’ needs are met.

He explained the practice of prioritizing party and personal interests over competence in the appointment of heads of independent institutions across Africa.

The Former Vice President believes this has weakened these institutions, hindering their ability to fulfill their role in ensuring accountability.

Dr. Bawumia made these remarks on Monday, January 27, 2025, during a discussion on democracy, governance, and political integrity in Nigeria.

He also called out technocrats who, for their narrow interests, set up these institutions for public ridicule.

The 2024 NPP Presidential candidate referenced the words of the late South African President, Nelson Mandela, who said that as long as poverty, injustice, and gross inequality exist in the world, none can truly rest.
