Managing Editor for the Daily Dispatch Newspaper, Ben Ephson, has predicted that Dr. Bawumia’s running mate might come from Members of Parliament from the Ashanti region.
He listed the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, Majority Leader of Parliament,Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu, and Energy Minister, Hon. Martin Opoku Prempeh, as potential candidates for the running mate position.
According to Mr. Ephson, the appointment of a candidate from the Ashanti region will be strategic to secure and boost the NPP’s votes in the Ashanti region, a stronghold of the party, come election 2024.
“The running mate will come from the Ashanti region, but I don’t know who it is. It could be one of the MPs,” he stated on the GTV Breakfast Show.
“In elections, you need to boost up your votes in your stronghold; you can fight with your opponent in the 3 regions of Greater Accra, Western, and Central,” he further explained.
He also explained his reason for excluding the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, from his list.
“You need someone who will be accessible to the supporters in the Ashanti region, and from my intelligence, I don’t think Mr. Adutwum is among the three listed,“ he stated.
On November 4, 2023, Dr. Bawumia passed his first hurdle on the road to the presidency, beating the vociferous Kennedy Agyapong to the game to become the flagbearer of the NPP, with over 61 percent of delegates across the country expressing their confidence in him.
