Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), visited Rev. John Ntim Fordjour following an attempted arrest at his residence by alleged National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officials on April 9.
The incident, linked to investigations into suspected drug trafficking and money laundering involving two international flights in March, has sparked political controversy.
Rev. Fordjour, Assin South MP and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, was described by Dr. Bawumia as “in high spirit and undaunted.” In a Facebook post, Bawumia stated, “Last night, following the attempted raid.
Rev. Fordjour was in high spirits despite the unfortunate incident.”
The Minority caucus in Parliament condemned the attempted arrest as politically motivated. Dr. Bawumia echoed these sentiments, urging NPP members to remain composed while denouncing what he termed “political persecution.”
He appealed directly to President John Mahama to intervene: “I wish to reiterate my earlier submission to the President… to rein in his security operatives. Security institutions must not be reduced to political tools.”
Bawumia further warned against undermining democratic norms: “Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear.” The incident adds tension amid Ghana’s political landscape as calls for accountability intensify.
