The Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Serebour Quaicoe has acknowledged that the Biometric Verification Devices used for the December 7 Elections are being deactivated for data preservation.
He explained the deactivation of the BVDs are being done so that nothing on it can be altered until the equipment need to be re-activated.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to take steps to preserve all relevant documents related to the elections as required by law.
This comes as the party alleges that the EC has directed all biometric devices used in the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections to be deactivated.
This the party says is illegal because Regulation 47 of the electoral law states that the commission shall subject to the provision of the regulations, retain for a year documents forwarded to the Commission and destroy the documents after a year unless otherwise ordered by a court.
In a statement signed by the Director of Election of the party, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the NDC said since it has disputed the election results, it views this illegal directive as a deliberate attempt to destroy evidence related to non-verification of voters in the elections.
This, it said, constitutes an election offense punishable upon conviction by two years imprisonment or five hundred penalty units or both.
