The Ranking Member on the Education Committee, Peter Nortsu – Kotoe, has disputed claims by the Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh that the Book and Research Allowance, was abolished under the previous administration, insisting, that every Lecturer was paid a Book and Research Allowance even in 2016, which was the last year of the former government.
His disagreement comes after the Education Minister, in a statement to Parliament Tuesday, touted what he described as massive achievements in the Education Sector since the Akufo-Addo Government assumed office three and half years ago.
Making a statement on the floor of Parliament, Dr. Opoku Prempeh spoke about the implementation of the Free SHS Programme which has so far benefited 1.2 million Students, increase in Capitation Grant from ¢4.50 to ¢10, Review of the Schools Curricula, Restoration of Teacher Trainees Allowances and Book and Research Allowances for University Lecturers, among others.
But Ranking Member, Education Committee, Peter Nortsu – Kotoe, says that the Teacher Trainee Allowance was abolished to do away with the quota system in the Colleges of Education which resulted in a significant increase in enrollment.
He questioned the seeming neglect of infrastructure at the Basic Level as well as Text Books to cover the new Curriculum.
