The committee investigating the recent chaos in Parliament will begin public hearings on Wednesday, February 5.
The Chairman of the committee, Emmanuel Bedzrah, announced this at a press conference on Monday, February 3.
The investigation follows a violent clash between the Majority and Minority sides during the vetting of ministerial nominees on Thursday, January 30. The incident led to the destruction of public property, prompting Speaker Alban Bagbin to form the seven-member committee.
Mr. Bedzrah assured the public that the investigation would be fair and transparent. He encouraged MPs, media representatives, and witnesses present at the vetting to provide information. The committee has also created a digital platform, including a WhatsApp channel, for people to submit videos, audio recordings, and photos as evidence.
“We will begin reviewing video evidence from Parliament today,” Mr. Bedzrah stated. He added that forensic experts from the police would help analyse and verify the multimedia evidence.
The public hearings will allow individuals to testify openly about what happened. “These hearings will offer an opportunity for those with firsthand knowledge of the chaotic scenes to come forward and share their accounts,” Mr. Bedzrah said.
The Speaker of Parliament established the committee on January 31, and already, four MPs have been suspended for two weeks due to their roles in the incident.
The committee’s main task is to identify those responsible and recommend appropriate actions.
