The Committee on Petitions of Ghana’s Parliament recently met with the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to seek guidance and clarification on its mandates. This meeting reflects the committee’s commitment to understanding and fulfilling its role effectively within the legislative framework.
The Speaker took the opportunity to enlighten members on the committee’s mandate as established by Order 223 of the Standing Orders. He emphasized that addressing grievances is a key and evolving function of Parliament. The creation of a dedicated committee for petitions within the Standing Orders highlights the importance of this role in ensuring that public concerns are heard and addressed.
Hon. Kwame Appiah Kodua, Chairman of the Committee, thanked the Speaker for his sound counsel and for providing the committee with a clear understanding of its responsibilities in handling petitions effectively. This clarity is crucial as the committee navigates its duties in representing the interests of the public and ensuring that their grievances are properly addressed.

The Committee on Petitions is one of 44 parliamentary committees and is notable for being chaired by a member not part of the government. Its membership includes Hon. Kofi Obiri Yeboah (Vice Chairman), Hon. Martin Kwaku Adjei-Mensah Korsah, Hon. Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Hon. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, and Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, among others. Their work underscores Parliament’s representational function in addressing public concerns and fostering democratic engagement.
