Supporter of the embattled Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West in the Central region, Mrs Cynthia Maaley Morrison and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary candidate, Mr. Chris Arthur clashed at Agona Nyankrom yesterday Sunday, October 27, 2024.

One person was said to have sustained gunshot wounds, and several others suffered minor injuries when a gun was fired through a crowd during a mini-rally organized by the incumbent NPP MP, who has decided to ditched her party to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.

According to Mr. Arthur, he and his supporters were returning to Agona Swedru from a campaign launch in Otinkorang, a community in the Agona West area.

He said when they got to Nyankrom, they encountered supporters of incumbent MP Mrs Morrison who were also campaigning.

The 2024 NPP PC, in an interview, explained that the incumbent MP’s rally was held on the only street which leads to Agona Swedru, so they had no option than to passed through the crowd.

“While we were passing through the crowd a gun was unexpectedly discharged, injuring one Haruna Rashid, the NPP Agona West Nassara Coordinator,” he added

Mr Rashid sustained gunshot wounds to the ribs.

Meanwhile, the Agona West NPP constituency chairman, Jibril Tanko, who was with the team accused the Mr. Cynthia Morrison for being the mastermind behind the attack.

According to him, the party’s campaign team was attacked by Cynthia Morrison’s team without any provocation when they attempted passing through the crowd.

“It is unfortunate we were attacked after we went on a campaign tour with our Parliamentary Candidate at Otinkorang. Our MP, Cynthia Morrison, was also launching her campaign at Agona Nyankrom and we had to go through the crowd at Nyankrom before getting to our destination.

The atmosphere in the crowd was a bit charged and Cynthia Morrison’s supporters started attacking us.

I even told my Parliamentary Candidate that the way things were going, we could not pass through the crowd but the unfortunate thing happened.

A gun was fired and the bullet hit Haruna Rashid, the campaign team manager for Chris Arthur and he has been rushed to Accra for treatment.” He ranted.

The incident has since been reported to the police for investigations to ensure the culprit is apprehended and prosecuted.

Other supporters who were also injured in the chaos were taken to Agona Swedru Government Hospital for treatment.
