Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who is currently serving as the Minister of Education, and Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bosomtwe Constituency in the Ashanti Region has publicly declared his interest in the position of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate slot
According to him, he is ready to serve as the running mate for NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The Bosomtwe lawmaker made his intention to grab the NPP’s running mate slot public when speaking in an interview with the host of the Citi FM Breakfast Show, a current affairs programme on an Accra-based Citi FM on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.
He also affirmed his availability to contribute his services to Ghana in whichever capacity when he is called upon.
“I am here to serve my nation, in any capacity I find myself I will serve this nation,” the Education Minister reiterated.
The party’s National Council, having the authority to make exceptions to party rules, agreed to waive the requirement that the vice presidential candidate be chosen one year before elections.
In a departure from the NPP’s traditional practice, the party’s flagbearer Dr. Bawumia was granted additional time to select his running mate in December last year.
This decision provides the 2024 NPP flagbearer with an extended timeframe to carefully consider his options and select the most suitable candidate for his running mate.
Some party stalwarts including current Energy Minister and MP for Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister/Majority leader/MP for Suame, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Mr. Joseph Osei-Owusu, the first deputy speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic and MP for Bekwai and Frema Opare, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the current Chief of Staff at the Office of the President among others are names emerging as possible candidates for Dr Bawumia to choose one as his running mate in the upcoming polls.
