After stakeholders have dealt with some thorny issues, the Electoral Commission has finally dedicated October to the 2023 District Level Elections.
The Stakeholders meeting was convened by Center For Local Government Advocacy, (CLGA)
The democratic exercise will involve the election of members for local Assemblies across the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the country.
One of the major assignments on the calendar of the Electoral Commission is the conduct of elections at the local government level for the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies. Among other things, the Electoral Commission is mandated by the Constitution to fix and announce dates and timelines for the district-level elections as well the processes leading to the elections.
Although this is expected this year, the hype of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections seems to have taken the minds of the public off the district level elections.
Deputy Chairman in charge of operations at the EC, Mr. Samuel Tettey says the Commission is resolved to bring all Ghanaians on board for the exercise.
Ghana’s District Assembly Elections Act of 1994, stipulates that “District Assembly Elections (DLE) must be held every four years and at least six months apart from parliamentary elections.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has indicated the month of October, 2023 to conduct the 2023 District-Level elections.
This comes after stakeholders identified some issues concerning the District Level Elections including the delay for the exact date to conduct the 2023 district-level elections which appear lost on most citizens in the discord of all subjects.
