EC to hold referendum to elect MMDCEs’

The Electoral Commission will on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, hold  a referendum for the election of MMDCE’s. Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, (MLGRD), Hajia Alima Mahama  made this known at the Meet the Press Series in Accra.

Announcing the roadmap on elections of MMDCEs across the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies,  she  said  The amendment Bill of Article 243 (1) on appointment of MMDCEs has also been approved by Cabinet, and laid in Parliament. 

The election of MMDCEs was a major campaign promise of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP), in the run-up to the 2016 election.

Briefing the press, Hajia Alima  Mahama explained that the Akufo-Addo led government is committed to this course.

She said  various stakeholders have been engaged across the country for consultations. 

The roadmap on election of MMDCE has been designed to be implemented in four (4) phases. These are Pre-Referendum Phase, Referendum Phase, Post Referendum Phase, Change Management and Capacity Building Phase.

Hajia Alima said government has significantly increased the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) net transfers to Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies from 2016-2018. She said the transfers have resulted in the provision of over 1,200 sub-projects; including educational infrastructure, health, water and sanitation facilities at the local level across the country.
