Ghana’s poultry sector is facing a crisis, with significant challenges hindering its growth, according to Eric Opoku, the Minister-Designate for Food and Agriculture.
Speaking during his vetting on Monday, January 20, Mr. Opoku emphasized the urgent need for reforms to address the sector’s difficulties and ensure food security and economic growth.
“The poultry industry is currently facing significant difficulties, including a substantial gap between demand and supply,” Opoku said. To address this, he outlined a comprehensive plan to revitalize the sector, which will be a key priority under his leadership.
Revamping the Poultry Sector
Mr. Opoku introduced the “Poultry Farm to the Table Programme,” an initiative aimed at collaborating with poultry farmers’ associations to provide financial resources and expand production. “To revamp the poultry sector, we have outlined a program in our manifesto. Under this initiative, we aim to collaborate with poultry farmers’ associations, providing them with the necessary financial resources to expand their businesses and increase production,” he explained.
The primary goal of the program is to narrow the gap between the supply of poultry products and increasing consumer demand. Mr. Eric Opoku also identified the high cost of poultry feed as a critical challenge and committed to prioritizing the production of affordable poultry feed to alleviate the burden on farmers.
