The Minister of Finance, Mohammed Amin Adam, has appealed to the Ghanaian public to forgive the government for the economic hardships faced by citizens.
Speaking at the Regional Townhall Meeting and Exhibitions at GNAT Hall, Hon. Adam discussed the economic challenges and achievements since his government took office in 2017.
The event featured notable speakers, including Greater Accra Regional Minister Hon. Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover and Minister of Information Hon. Fatimatu Abubakar.
The meeting, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), aimed to foster citizen engagement and gather feedback for policy implementation.
Hon. Adam explained that the decision to restructure the country’s debt was a necessity mandated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), not an intentional act to impose hardship.
“No government intends to impose hardship on its people, especially not the NPP Government, which has demonstrated its commitment to reducing the burden on Ghanaians”.
The Finance Minister highlighted the success of the domestic exchange program, which achieved a 95% participation rate.
He noted that, It was a necessary decision at the time, and avoiding it would have hindered the economy’s recovery.
He also explained the improvement in Ghana’s debt-to-GDP ratio, which decreased from 72% to 70.6%, a figure he described as “far better than the 2015 record.”
