Former President John Dramani Mahama, has pledged his party’s support to the Electoral Commission (EC) to make the Electoral process successful in order to consolidate the democratic credentials of the country.
He urged the Commission to continually ensure a level playing field to court the confidence of all stakeholders.
He highlighted the Chairperson Mrs. Mensa’s contribution to advancing the course of democracy in Ghana through her hard work at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).
He commended the EC for the initiative in engaging with him and other stakeholders, adding that it was the beginning of confidence building between the NDC and the EC.
Former President Mahama made these remarks when Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the EC led a team of Commissioners to pay a courtesy call on him in his office in Cantonments, Accra.
Other Members of the team were, the Deputy Chairman, Operations, Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare and a Commissioner, Adwoa Asuama Abrefa.
The engagement is aimed at demystifying the operations of the Commission. The visit to Former President Mahama formed part of a series of visits to key stakeholders of Ghana’s Development process as well as building trust and confidence in the electoral process.
Also present at the meeting were the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the General Secretary of NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia and other senior Officials of the party; Nana Ato Dadzie, former Chief of Staff under Mahama led administration, Julius Debrah, Ato Ahwoi, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and other party officials .
Mr. Mahama noted that the exhibition of transparency, trust and fairness, would enable stakeholders accept the outcome of elections, which would help advance peace and security of the country.
Chairman of the NDC, Ofosu-Ampofo noted among others that the Party had contributed immensely to the deepening of the electoral processes in the country over the years and that it would continue to engage in constructive advice to the Electoral Commission in a bid to strengthen the electoral process.
For her part, Mrs. Mensa reiterated the Commission’s recognition of the NDC as a key stakeholder in Ghana’s electoral process. She noted that the Commission was keen to build and strengthen the platform for dialogue with the NDC.
She highlighted the EC was open to constructive criticisms as part of the Commission’s efforts to strengthen Ghana’s electoral Process.
