Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has clarified his stance on seeking additional funding from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), contradicting earlier media reports.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, Dr. Forson stressed that he never said the new government would request additional IMF funding, despite Ghana’s ongoing program with the institution.

Instead, Dr. Forson explained that his comments were speculative and contingent on future developments.

He emphasised the importance of flexibility in managing the nation’s economic affairs, suggesting that seeking additional IMF support could be an option if circumstances require it.

“What I said was that we could request additional finance if the need arises.”

The finance minister-designate urged the media to exercise caution when reporting his statements to avoid public misinterpretation.

His clarification comes after earlier reports suggested that the new government was planning to request additional IMF funding, sparking concerns about Ghana’s economic management.
