Former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, says four years is too short for a president to bring real development to a country.

‎Speaking at a leadership event in Ada, Ghana on April 24, 2025, Dr. Jonathan told ministers and government officials that the presidential term in Nigeria and Ghana is too short compared to other African countries, where most presidents serve five-year terms.

‎“In Nigeria and Ghana, our presidents only get four years. What can someone really do in four years?” he asked.

‎Dr. Jonathan explained that a new president needs at least one year to settle into office. That leaves only two full years to work, as the final year is usually focused on the next election.

‎He believes this short time makes it hard for leaders to plan and complete long-term projects that help grow the country.
