The National Celebrations Planning Committee (NCPC) has unveiled a series of activities to commemorate Ghana’s 68th Independence Day Anniversary, which will be observed on March 6, 2025. The celebrations will honour the country’s rich history and foster national unity under the theme, “Reflect, Review, Reset.”

The commemorative events will begin with the remembrance of the 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident, a historic event in Ghana’s struggle for independence. A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at Nationalism Park in Accra on February 28, 2025, at 8 a.m. This event will be broadcast live and streamed on various media platforms to ensure widespread participation. In the lead-up to the ceremony, the Communications Subcommittee of the NCPC will roll out educational content on television, radio, and social media to highlight the significance of the incident and its role in Ghana’s independence movement. Additionally, an X-space conversation titled “The Changing Face of Civil Protests in Ghana: Lessons from the Past and Present” will be hosted to engage citizens in discussions about civil activism.

Other activities include the finals of a nationwide school quiz competition on March 2, a debate competition on March 4, and the President’s school children awards program on March 5. The celebrations will culminate in a ceremonial parade at the forecourt of the Presidency on March 6. This event will feature cultural performances and poetry recitals by students, with attendance from dignitaries including chiefs, religious leaders, and representatives from various sectors.

The NCPC has encouraged media outlets, bloggers, and the general public to actively participate in promoting these activities and sharing information to deepen public engagement. The scaled-down nature of this year’s celebrations reflects a commitment to cost-saving measures while maintaining the essence of national pride and reflection.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, expressed optimism about public participation in this year’s events. He emphasized that the activities aim to honor Ghana’s heroes while inspiring a renewed sense of patriotism among citizens. Further updates on additional activities are expected in the coming days.
