Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), has conducted a comprehensive assessment of key water treatment plants in Accra to address significant production shortfalls. The tour included visits to the Weija, Kpong, and Accra Desalination Plants, where he engaged with engineers to identify operational challenges and potential solutions. This proactive move follows management’s recognition of critical challenges affecting water supply and the need for urgent interventions to bridge the demand-supply gap.
Accra faces a substantial water deficit, with a daily demand of 220 million gallons against a production capacity of 130 million gallons. This results in a significant shortfall of 90 million gallons, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced operational efficiency and infrastructure upgrades. Mr. Mutawakilu emphasized the importance of swift action to address equipment maintenance issues and operational setbacks that hinder optimal production.

During his tour, Mr. Mutawakilu was accompanied by his team of Chief Managers and the Acting Deputy Managing Director in charge of operations. They also visited strategic installations, including the Mile 18 Central Workshop, where essential repairs and fabrication of pipes, pumps, and drainage systems are carried out. The Central Store, which houses essential chemicals and materials, was also inspected. Efforts are underway to provide necessary resources to ensure the swift repair of old pumps and parts vital for improving Accra’s water supply.

Mr. Mutawakilu reaffirmed GWL’s commitment to implementing both short-term and long-term solutions to ensure residents have access to a reliable and sustainable water supply. The company plans to adopt advanced water treatment technologies to improve efficiency and reduce water losses. Additionally, plans are underway to rehabilitate aging infrastructure and expand existing treatment plants to boost production capacity in line with the growing population and industrial expansion.
