In an effort to combat illegal mining, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has led a significant operation by the Regional Anti-galamsey taskforce. The team, which includes National Security, Police, Mineral Commission, and Environmental Protection Agency, conducted a successful operation at New Ebudiase along the Pra River. This operation is part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle the environmental and social impacts of galamsey, which have been detrimental to Ghana’s natural resources.
During the operation, the taskforce seized 7 excavators and demobilized 5 more. Additionally, they confiscated 2 generators, 2 motorbikes, pump-action guns, and other mining equipment. All seized items were transported to the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) for further action. The confiscation of these items underscores the government’s resolve to dismantle the infrastructure supporting illegal mining activities.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene emphasized the government’s clear stance on responsible mining practices. He reiterated that miners must stay off forest reserves and river bodies, refrain from roadside mining, and cover pits when mining on concessions. These guidelines are designed to ensure that mining activities do not harm the environment or pose risks to local communities. By adhering to these rules, miners can operate legally and sustainably.
The government is ready to assist those who wish to mine responsibly, but it will maintain zero tolerance for irresponsible mining activities. This operation highlights the government’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring environmental safety. The crackdown on illegal mining is part of broader efforts to preserve the country’s ecosystems and promote sustainable development. As the government continues to enforce these measures, it is expected that the environmental degradation caused by galamsey will be significantly reduced, leading to a healthier and more sustainable future for Ghana.
