The National Fishers and Processors Traders Association (NAFPTA) welcomed the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, during a significant meeting aimed at discussing pressing concerns within Ghana’s fisheries sector. This gathering took place on February 19, 2025, and served as a platform for NAFPTA members to express their support for the Minister and outline critical issues affecting the industry.
During the meeting, NAFPTA members conveyed their enthusiasm regarding Hon. Arthur’s appointment and pledged their commitment to ensuring the availability of safe and high-quality fish to meet the nutritional needs of Ghanaians. They emphasized their dedication to maintaining industry standards and promoting sustainability within the fisheries sector. A primary concern raised was the necessity of ensuring the wholesomeness of fish from the moment it lands on the beach, which is vital for consumer safety.

In addition to food safety, NAFPTA members appealed for governmental support in improving access to loans. They argued that enhanced financial resources would significantly aid in business growth and contribute positively to the overall development of the fisheries industry. This request highlights a broader call for financial empowerment within the sector, which is crucial for its sustainability.
Responding to these concerns, Hon. Emelia Arthur commended NAFPTA for its dedication and acknowledged its essential role in bolstering Ghana’s food security. She recognized the contributions made by the association in making fish more accessible and safer for consumption. In her address, she emphasized the importance of collaboration among industry stakeholders to tackle challenges effectively and improve productivity within the fisheries sector.
“We must be united to work together to achieve the same goal,” stated Minister Arthur, underscoring her vision for greater cooperation between her Ministry and industry players. This call for unity reflects her commitment to fostering a resilient fisheries industry that benefits all Ghanaians.
The meeting also served as an opportunity for NAFPTA members to discuss various challenges facing the fisheries sector, including issues related to illegal fishing practices, overfishing, and inadequate regulatory oversight. These challenges have led to significant declines in fish stocks, particularly small pelagic species that are vital to local communities.

As part of her agenda, Emelia Arthur has committed to addressing concerns raised by various stakeholders within the fishing community. She aims to implement measures that will not only protect fish stocks but also ensure that those who depend on fishing for their livelihoods can thrive sustainably.
